Richard Powley

2015 Hawksbill Award Recipient

We are proud to recognize Richard Powley as recipient of the 2015 PATC Hawksbill Award for outstanding commitment and performance supporting the Appalachian Trail in the South District of Shenandoah National Park.

Richard began his service as an Appalachian Trail overseer on March 10, 2010 for the A.T. in the South District of Shenandoah National Park between Powell Gap and the summit of Flattop Mountain.

In 2015, Richard devoted over 90 hours of his time maintaining his assigned trail section. His commitment does not end at his A.T. section. Richard is our “go-to” maintainer when we ask him to help with other projects and issues. Whether the unanticipated project involves removing downed trees—Richard maintains his NPS chain sawyer certification—or helping another overseer who, for personal or professional reasons, needs help, Richard Powley makes himself available. He is a standard-bearer for volunteerism and trail expertise.

It is our honor to recognize Richard Powley for his outstanding work and commitment.
